Winter storm paralyzes air traffic in Atlanta

A heavy winter storm moving throughout the southeastern U.S. Monday has forced airlines to cancel more than 2,200 flights at major airports in the region.

Delta Air Lines and AirTran Airways have canceled nearly all of their flights at Atlanta Hartsfield, the world's busiest airport, as the storm dumped 3 to 6 inches of snow in the city.

Delta, the airport's largest carrier, says it has canceled 1,950 mainline and Delta Connection flights system-wide, or about 35% of all planned flights for the day. Monday's cancellations are in addition to about 500 Delta and Delta Connection flights canceled Sunday evening due to snow and ice.

AirTran, whose largest hub is based in Atlanta, says it has also canceled all flights to and from Atlanta for Monday. More than 370 AirTran flights were called off for the day.

The last time AirTran canceled all flights in a city was after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, according to Bloomberg News. Continue ►
