Despite its recall woes, Toyota still managed to nab two of the top ten spots. Still, it was hardly the “year of Toyota” since there was plenty of good news for three volume brands. Ford saw the highest percentage increase of sales of all full-line automakers, while Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and Audi all broke sales records for the year.

But when it comes down to looking at individual models consumers bought in droves, the results might surprise you. Japanese family sedans are en vogue, both in compact (Corolla and Civic) and midsize (Camry, Accord, Altima) flavors. Only one domestic-branded sedan – the Ford Fusion – made the list and, in marked contrast to prior years, only one crossover or SUV – the Honda CR-V – proved especially popular with consumers. Naturally, pickups rounded out the top and bottom of the list.
Other notable absentees that regularly showed up on monthly top 10 lists but were absent from the overall list include the Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Elantra, the Ford Escape and the Toyota RAV4. The Chevrolet Malibu was a close 11th place with 198,770 sales.
And if you’re counting – the Ford F-Series was the undisputed champion this year. Combined, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra still fell well short. You’ll see Silverado sales below, but GMC managed to move 129,794 Sierras, a 16 percent increase over the year before.
Here’s the top 10 list. The number that follows in parenthesis is the percentage the vehicle’s sales increased or decreased compared to the year before.
